The development of the Hutsy Financial app presented several critical challenges. One of the primary hurdles was ensuring real-time synchronization between the user’s bank card and their account information within the app. This required building a robust infrastructure capable of handling instantaneous updates without delays, providing users with a seamless experience. Additionally, to safeguard sensitive financial data, we had to implement advanced encryption mechanisms, ensuring that user data is securely encrypted and decrypted only during active sessions.
Another significant challenge was preparing the backend infrastructure to scale efficiently and handle the onboarding of 50,000+ users. This required meticulous planning and optimization to guarantee a smooth user experience, even under heavy load. Overcoming these challenges demanded a well-coordinated effort across development, security, and infrastructure to deliver a highly reliable and secure fintech solution.
To address these challenges, we implemented a custom backend webhook that listens for real-time transactions from Galileo’s system, a third-party vendor powering Hutsy's financial infrastructure. This webhook ensures that every transaction updates the user's profile on the backend in real time, reflecting immediately in the app to keep the user’s financial data accurate and up-to-date.
For data security, we utilized the CryptoJS library to encrypt sensitive user information such as names, emails, and dates of birth. Each user session is protected with a JWT (JSON Web Token), ensuring that information is only accessible with a valid token. Data is decrypted only when fetched with a valid JWT, maintaining strict privacy standards throughout each session.
To support 50,000+ users, we developed a scalable backend infrastructure on AWS, implementing auto-scaling to handle high traffic and peak usage without service interruptions. We also conducted disaster recovery tests to simulate server failures and ensure seamless recovery in case of unexpected outages. As a Canadian company, we ensured compliance with data residency regulations by hosting all infrastructure within Canadian data centers, safeguarding user privacy and maintaining legal compliance.
As a result, we successfully built a secure, scalable, and real-time financial platform with the following key features:
The Hutsy Financial App now offers users a secure, real-time banking experience with seamless card transactions, encrypted sessions, and a robust backend capable of scaling with the company’s growth trajectory.
